Why Score 4 Was Developed

This program was created because two teachers were excited about helping struggling readers.  The intervention programs we were seeing in classrooms simply weren't creating successful readers and were causing too much stress among the struggling readers that needed the help.  We set out to generate a simple, complete program that worked -- really worked -- for so many of the different kinds of learners we know are in your classrooms.

We started with a great method that worked well with one reader and one teacher.  But we knew that no matter how sound the methodology was, working one-on-one just wasn’t practical in a classroom situation.  We also realized the need for having all the materials included in the package, because we knew that teachers just didn't have the time to gather together all the materials that would be needed to make the program work effeciently.  This is why Score 4 Reading was created.

This program is a practical application of Reading Theory and Process Learning Theory, united, and includes an integrated assessment tool.  It has turned out to be highly productive and fun, for both the readers and adults involved.  After a couple of weeks of participating in the reading sessions, one child blurted out, “I can’t believe I can read so good, and my mom keeps asking me to read ‘cause I don’t think she can believe it either!”

With the efforts of Eileen Orsini -- a Reading Specialist in Oregon’s Springfield School District -- and Dr. Jill Schwimmer, Score 4 Reading was developed.  It's a system of working with up to five readers at a time, with appropriate materials to address the limitations of working in a classroom. The goal of Score 4 is to work with a reader until he or she is capable of generating successful reading -- feels comfortable, sounds natural, and makes sense -- when reading appropriate materials.
