Score 4 Reading Program Development StudyParticipants and Timing99 students from ten different schools over a three-year period participated (thirty-nine 3rd graders, forty 4th graders, and twenty 5th graders). Students were assessed before beginning the Score 4 Reading sessions and re-assessed after an average of fifteen weeks. During this period, the readers received an average of 14 hours of instruction (28, ½ hour reading sessions).
AssessmentThe assessment tool for the pre and post-test was a “running record.” The reading and the comprehension re-tell were tape-recorded.
Rate, accuracy, fluency, and comprehension were all taken into account.
Development Study Results
Rate Improvement -- Words Per Minute:
Accuracy or Miscues -- Errors, self-corrections, and changes that work:
Fluency: We used a stringent 4 point scale scoring guide.Fluency at a Score of 4 -- Natural, smooth, and conversational:
Comprehension: We used a stringent 4 point scale scoring guide.Comprehension at a 4 was defined as “complete.”
ConclusionsAt all grade levels there was a significant increase in rate, accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. Most important is the focused attention that all readers now give to comprehension. It is particularly noteworthy that all of this growth occurred with an average of only 14 hours of instruction. The theoretical constructs of the Integrated Reading Method that underlie the Score 4 Reading methodology are sound, and the practical application of this method was developed with a deep understanding of theory and method in mind. Score 4 Reading has shown itself to be an efficient and effective intervention.
